Oil companies paid the most in taxes

… last year Exxon and Chevron ranked in the top two companies that paid the most in taxes. ConocoPhillips ranked sixth in terms of taxes paid, reports USA Today. In 2012, Exxon paid $31.05 billion, Chevron paid $20 billion, and ConocoPhillips paid $7.94 billion.

“The oil and gas industry gets no subsidies, zero, nothing,” said Jack Gerard, president and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute — the nation’s largest oil and gas lobby. “We get cost-recovery benefits, much like other industries. You can go down the road of allowing economic activity, generating hundreds of billions to the government, or you can take the alternative route by trying to extract new revenue from industry by increasing their cost to do business.”

Meanwhile…

In fact, the big three oil companies paid multiples more, in both total dollars and effective tax rates, than such administration favorites as Apple, Google and General Electric.

Global Warming: Was It Just A Beautiful Dream After All?

So where’s the warming? Where are the gondolas pulling up to the Capitol? Where are the encroaching seas in Florida? Or anywhere? Where is the climate change which, for 33 years, has been just around the corner?

A generation and a half into climate change, née global warming, you can’t point to a single place on earth where the weather is noticeably different from what it was in 1979. Or 1879, for that matter.

In addition to the political gains, it was not lost on the Liberals that the “caring” about the environment was a great way to raise revenue through increased taxes and fees — and they went about saving the planet by raising revenue with a zeal usually reserved for parties on left.

The fly in the ointment, of course, is that the entire premise of climate change is based on the demonstrably false hypothesis that increased CO2 in the atmosphere raises global temperatures. B.C.’s hydroelectricity produces no CO2. Increased use of B.C. hydropower cannot “contribute to climate change.”

1.  Significant temperature drop at about 2016-17
2.  Possible unusual cold snap 2021-22
3.  Built in cooling trend until  at least 2024
4.  Temperature Hadsst3 moving average anomaly 2035  - 0.15
5.  Temperature Hadsst3 moving average anomaly 2100  – 0.5
6.  General Conclusion – by 2100 all the 20th century temperature rise will have been reversed,
7.  By 2650  earth could possibly be back to the depths of the little ice age.
8.  The effect of increasing CO2 emissions will be minor but beneficial  - they may slightly ameliorate the forecast cooling and help maintain crop yields .
9. Warning !!  There are some signs in the Livingston and Penn Solar data that a sudden drop to the Maunder Minimum Little Ice Age temperatures could be imminent – with a much more rapid and economically disruptive cooling than that forecast above which may turn out to be a best case scenario.

Good thing we have all that wind power and pixie dust to keep us warm…

The UK parliament has committed itself – in what may well be the most expensive and boneheaded act of all time – to cutting emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. So now the aim is to wind down coal use, while boosting wind power, with gas and nuclear as awkward compromises.

In future, UK consumers are not only paying extra for green energy but are forking out for an effective governments-can’t-make-a-decision surcharge, too.

From the economy to energy production, the inability of governments to act decisively has become a material force in its own right, which holds back society. The real problem with UK politics today is that there’s somebody home but the lights are off – and if the situation continues, that won’t just be metaphorically.

One of the ideas that seems to be widely believed is that human produced greenhouse gases, chiefly CO2, has dominated the warming of the earth in the last century. It is a simple quantitative matter to show that this is completely false.

If Cypriot depositors are forced to pay today, why not Spanish ones tomorrow? People queuing up in massive numbers outside ATM machines is always an incredibly scary sight wherever you are and given the anger in Cyprus, we just don’t know how people will react when banks open again (unclear when, the Cypriot government may declare both Tuesday and Wednesday bank holidays as well). But fears of deposit-led contagion to other parts of the eurozone should definitely not be be overstated.

If Cyprus goes, the rest will follow…can’t wait for for the musical…
