Gun-related homicides and crime are “strikingly” down from 20 years ago, despite the American public’s belief that firearm crime is on the upswing, a new study said Wednesday.
Looking back 50 years, a Pew Research Center study found U.S. gun homicides rose in the 1960s, gained in the 1970s, peaked in the 1980s and the early 1990s, and then plunged and leveled out the past 20 years.
“Despite national attention to the issue of firearm violence, most Americans are unaware that gun crime is lower today than it was two decades ago,” the researchers say.

- About 11:45 p.m., someone with a shotgun opened fire on two 20-year-old men walking in an alley near the 800 block of West 51st Street, police said. One man was struck multiple times, and the other sustained a gunshot wound to the upper back
- A 24-year-old woman sustained a graze wound to the shoulder about 10:30 p.m
- About 8:30 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot multiple times in Washington Park
- A 16-year-old girl was shot on the 700 block of East Oakwood Boulevard at 7:21 p.m.
- About 5:15 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot near Windsor Avenue and Sheridan Road
- About 4:30 p.m., a 30-year-old man was shot in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard

WaPo reports that the Obama administration has ordered additional U.S. troops to Jordan for possible chemical weapons control, humanitarian response or “stability operations” in Syria. “The new troops, a headquarters element of the 1st Armored Division based at Fort Bliss, Tex., will not greatly increase the number of U.S. forces in Jordan.
But they’re unarmed…

President Obama angrily blamed the defeat Wednesday of his centerpiece gun-control proposal on lies spread by the National Rifle Association, calling it “a pretty shameful day for Washington.”
“The gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill,” Mr. Obama said in the White House rose garden about 90 minutes after the vote. “It came down to politics.”
We expect Obama to capitalize on the tragedy of others, but the parents of the victims?
As he spoke, Mr. Obama was surrounded by family members of victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks.

It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with five Democrats voting against it. Only four Republicans supported it.
Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again.
GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk (Ill.) voted “yes.”

Manifestly, they don’t, so they send out victims to make the argument for them, knowing no one will argue with a person whose child has just been murdered.
