Nearly 90,000 Apply For Disability, December Record

As a result, there are now more than 8.8 million workers collecting Social Security disability insurance (SSDI), a new high, as the explosive growth in the program continues unabated

Even with the recent decline in the unemployment rate, there are 4.8 million long-term unemployed, and the average length of unemployment is 40 weeks, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both figures are higher than they were when the recession ended in June 2009.

Nothing says “recovery” like…
