UK – First They Come for Your Guns…

14 Mar

If you don’t believe the only thing standing between the First Amendment and tyranny is the Second Amendment, just look what’s happening in Britain – where they took the guns away years ago…

Miliband and Clegg form alliance in bid to shackle free press

Tory MP Philip Davies said: ‘The future of Press freedom in this country is now under serious threat from an unholy alliance of Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg. The public should be very frightened at the prospect of politicians trying to regulate the Press.’

Conor Burns, a fellow Tory member of the committee, accused Mr Miliband and Mr Clegg of stitching up a ‘squalid little deal’ that would damage free speech in Britain.

‘The Prime Minister is right to reject statutory regulation of the Press – free of political control for 300 years – as fundamentally wrong in principle and unworkable in practice,’ they added.

But when the ruling class has nothing to fear….

    What a terrible post.

The UK press like the press in many countries is not free now, it is under the heavy influence of people like Rupert Murdoch. Clegg and Miliband are trying to free the press from these people so they can report the news as it is and not as the are being told to report it.
I am a UK citizen and do not support either Cameron, Clegg or Miliband but on this issue Clegg and Miliband are in the right.

Because nothing says “free” like statutory review and approval by the very individuals the press should be questioning. Eight centuries if British common law inexorably being washed away. Enjoy the decline,

But your assuming that the press is free now, which it isn’t.

It is free from statutory state control – you may or may not agree with the proprietors but at least the press can still hold politicians’ and elites feet to the fire. Or do you prefer the Argentine and Venezuelan models.

Your proposed press regs are another slippery slope to tyranny – and since the British populace has no ultimate deterrence since giving up arms – you are hooped. The same thing is happening in Australia. First the guns now the press, then speech, assembly, religious freedom. It happened in Russia, China, Cambodia, Germany – and it has happened in England’s history before – first the arms, then…

But you’re probably right – it could never happen again. Stock up on tinned goods.

    Paranoid comes to mind.

    Press regs explained: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/mar/15/press-regulator-battle-explained

There will be an independent panel overseeing the regs (no government people). Clegg and Miliband want the panel to be truly independent but Cameron wants the press to have a veto over who sits on that ‘independent’ panel… not so independent.

Also in todays news…Phone hacking: Rupert Murdoch hit by 600 fresh claims (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/mar/15/phone-hacking-murdoch-news-world)

Overreach also comes to mind. You have libel and defamation laws already.
You have civil and criminal laws that deal with material damages .

What the British left, spurred on Hacked Off want are a new set of “pre-crime” laws and panels to arbitrate hurt feelings.

Once we criminalize opinion, what can’t be criminalized. And what is the defence? It will no longer be the truth.

The Britain of Magna Carta, Acts of Settlement, the English Bill of Rights – even Churchill and Thatcher is gone. And the world is worse for it.

I think you have either misunderstood the Leveson inquiry or (like Fox news) you are deliberately distorting the facts of the situation to suit your own agenda.

You place a lot of faith in the government – who knows, maybe they’ll get this one right – it would be first. From the looks of things we’re about to find out…

Yep, time will tell, if we still remember in a year or two (or more) one of us can say to the other… “I told you so!” lol
